The legendary Me 109 formed the backbone of the German Luftwaffe in World War II. This small fighter, compared to its Allied counterparts, was successfully deployed on all fronts against the numerically and later also technically superior Allied aircraft. Although it had reached the zenith of its development by the end of 1942 at the latest, the BF 109 was constantly kept competitive due to numerous modifications, and in the hands of an experienced pilot, it remained a serious opponent for any Allied pilot until the end of the war. It is no coincidence that the BF 109, or better known as the Messerschmitt Me 109, is the type with which the top aces of the Luftwaffe achieved their incredible kill counts.
